I think that artistic style is just how everyone sees the world! I don't think there's really a right or wrong way to go about it. It all depends on the person like i'm a very anime- style person while one of my friends is more on the realistic side.
In art style people should test out different styles and develope their own, people are constantly giving creatique so people can get anatomy right. But, if its own style, you should be able to choose wether or not you want to be anatomically correct or not.
Well i dont think i have a style really, i most of the time draw realisticly :] But when i do want to draw loose and cartoonish it never turns out the same, sometimes i try to see how many times i can stylize a certain animal but still make it look like that animal. I guess that could be called caricature Example: [link] i never usually draw like that, just another expeirament
As for the term "style" here on DA, its become a term thats very overused. For example people get in fights if their styles are similar "you copied me!!" "your not aloud to draw like that! its my thing!" which is sad :[ Style is how you draw, it shouldnt be something to argue about. Mimicing styles isen't wrong either, it helps us grow as artists and learn new techniques. I know i did that when i started out drawing
Style is awesome and I kinda wish people would follow it more then they follow anatomy. Look at Johnen Vasquez, he has awesome work and he doesn't follow anatomy much. Anatomy is boring. xP
Artistic styles are how a person draws or expresses themselves. Some of us use the people around us or ourselves as models for what we draw, so our art ends up looking similar to those models. Style is also like handwriting, there's a very slim chance that there are two that are the same.
As others are saying, anatomy before style! There is no pleasant feeling when seeing a disjointed arm that isn't supposed to look disjointed. D:
For me, I like the look of a lot of different styles, but I wouldn't want to draw in all of those styles. Style is cool, and I am still trying to perfect mine and make it more original.
I think it should be recongnizeable from others art and should be what the artist likes drawing. For an example; if you like drawing stuff that's dark and unappealing to most people, you should continue drawing that even if more people like sprakly pretty stuff.
It depend as 'style' is thrown around so much on Da it sort of loses the meaning of it. To many are going 'it's my style' as a reason not to learn anatomy or the basics of drawing and colouring.
I think having a style is really good and help other pick you out of other artist Like the guy that does Scott Pilgrim it's in a style but still holds basic anatomy of humans, it's just in a more simple style and simple anatomy. It's good to have a style but you must learn the basics of drawing the subject before you can style it in your own way.
People that style things before learning how to draw them are going backwards in my view and making it a lot harder on themself. Style takes time and practice once one has learned how to draw the subject first.
People that mimic other styles are doing it wrong as well as they then copy that persons mistakes and don't learn. I have seen many that mimic other styles and then mimic the mistakes as well not knowing they have, as they think that person is perfect (taking about someone that mimics someone popular and then thinking coz they are popular that they draw perfect). I myself did that in the past and when I look back on any of it I see all the mistakes on what I did. Then when looking at at the person I was copying I saw all the mistakes they have made on it like horrible anatomy which I did not notice before hand (I didn't know basic anatomy back then)
