"I can't do great works of art because all I have is MS Paint"

It's NOT the program, it's the artist using the program.
Remember that.

EDIT: I should probably mention this was 50+ hours or work for this. So don't be discouraged and think this person actually just sat down and did this in like 5 minutes, haha! And yes, it IS the newer version of MS Paint (Windows 7 and higher maybe? I don't know if Windows 8 has MS Paint or not).

I 100% agree! As a former Paint user, I can definitely say that from experience. I am now a Photoshop user, but it doesn't mean I am better than others. Trust me, I saw crappy (REALLY crappy!) drawings on PS, and awesome ones on Paint (like the one in that journal).

I agree! I used to use Paint for all of my pixels as well. It maybe took more time because it's easier to work when you have separate layers for everything, but it's entirely possible to create something fantastic! Unfortunately, no program is a miracle worker and using a fancier program won't automatically make your art better. ^^;

(That being said, I need to work with SAI instead of GIMP, because SAI has that stabilizer and my lines tend to be overly wobbly without it!)

It's true. The art on MSPAINTADVENTURES is done in MS Paint (duhh xD ). The only reason my sister doesn't read Homestuck is because the art is "Horrible,". It's actually fantastic, but she hates it all because it's done with pixels. She can't appreciate it because 'she goes to a special art college' and 'things that aren't done in photoshop suck' stuff like that. Oh Brother...

Ya know, I downloaded gimp a while back because I eventually wanted to do stuff with layers, but it was too complicated for me and I went back to MS Paint. My best work will still probably be done with traditional colored pencils, but I still like cleaning up stuff in Paint and experimenting with digital coloring every now and then. For me, this video was a nice affirmation that real artists are those that do amazing things with whatever they have, not simply because they use the best supplies or programs.

Thank you for posting this.

I use the old version of MS Paint for all my stuff (except for the occasional edit in GIMP) because it's simple to use and I've been using it since I was 5 years old XD Just draw, and a simple click to color something, definitely saves time. It's definitely the artist that makes Paint drawings good, not the program itself.

Like Windows Movie Maker. I've had people ask me what I make my videos with, and most can't believe it when I say Windows Movie Maker... an older version with less effects and stuff. Learning tricks and mixes of tools really helps in quality, even with simple Windows programs.

So very true. ^^

I also hear people say
"Oh sorry my art is terrible because i don't have a tablet"
Its not that you use a computer , its that you are just a little "new" to drawing and haven't reached your "full potential"

People say I have an artist eye, and I agree, I can tell if some one draws something, or takes a picture of something, but THIS..if I wasn't LITERALLY WATCHING this being drawn I'd go and say; That. Was a picture.
.

The talent just swept me off of my feet.

Very, very impressive. The newest versions of MS Paint (I have the Windows 7 version on my laptop) is a small but very powerful drawing tool. It's nothing like the old XP version. If one has the patience and the discipline to use Paint's various features and the imagination to push it to the limit, there really is no limit to what can be created with Paint.

I think of how the classic Atari 2600 gaming console, which was designed to only play Pong, was pushed by programmers with creative coding to play some very impressive games toward the end of its run in the late 80's. Paint may be the Atari 2600 of art software--under-appreciated, but flexible, modular and full of surprises.

And people can't just download GIMP or Inkscape or OO.Draw or DrawPile (or go to AlternativeTo and pick any other free alternative to PS/SAI they desire) because?..

That's why I still use MS Paint, you can definitely create good art with it if you have the skill and determination

Also, the basic MS Paint doesn't have a layering option...(which I believe this dude does have)

Nope, as far as I know none of the MS Paint programs (even up to date) have a layering option. I have Windows 7 which has the same version used here (it was standard with the computer). There's no layer options :)
There are different tools, but they too aren't too advanced either.

Sure, but I don't believe this great artist created that with his mouse. If all you have is MS Paint, you can't do much. Until you get a TABLET. :|

I'm starting to wonder if your one of those people spoiled with artists that use photoshop PTSai and a tablet.... I use a mouse and I think I draw nicley enough on any program as long as I know how to use it this person who drew this had odvoisly MASTERED Ms.Paint.

I'm pretty sure they did, but this was also 50+ hours of time put into this particular piece and no doubt some referencing going on.
I'm not saying MS Paint is comparable to say -- Photoshop, but as you can see you can still create some pretty astonishing works of art with that program given enough time and skill.
Skills that anyone stubborn and patient enough can develop.

I believe the artist used a tablet, too. Trying to use a mouse would make you scream "I hate meeces to peeces!" :)

I have used a mouse almost exclusively for my digital drawing since high school, when I first used the original Macintosh Plus in the school computer lab in the 80's (yup, I'm an old and feeble man ;) ). I'm left-handed but use a mouse with my right. Over the years I've become comfortable drawing this way, so much that when I tried to use a tablet in a Flash animation class two years ago, it felt just too weird (I kept accidentally deleting what I just drew) and I switched back to the mouse.

The closest thing to a tablet I use is the built-in mouse pad on my laptop.
