Once it's online it's out there.

I think it's a shame to add watermarks but it is most definitely a necessity, seeing as once you've put something on the internet you cannot guarantee that you can remove it from everywhere. Someone, somewhere, will have saved it or re-uploaded it or whatever. Therefore, if it's your work and anyone can access it via DeviantArt and other websites (maybe albeit at a lower resolution), watermarking it is a protection measure you can add. There's nothing wrong with that - I don't see why people would be against it. Especially if it's smallish but still enough to show its origin and artist.

As you said, it's your work. You created it; it belongs solely to you.

If you sell prints for people surely you could have those with the semi-transparent watermark, as they can never be scanned in to a good enough resolution to use for anything?
